Finishing Ancient Kauri
............................

Patience is the key.
The beauty of grain activity and depth is incredible and worth the extra work.
To get the most beautiful look from your Ancient Kauri we suggest that you sand
to a 1200-grit before applying your finish.
600-grit is the minimum we recommend.
It is a slow job and very well worth it.
Click here to see some exciting examples of finished Ancient Kauri.
Ancient Kauri takes every finish we have tried.
These include oil based varnishes, water based varnishes, oil, wax, epoxies
and two-part finishes such as AwlBrite®.
All of these finishes have their own looks and qualities.
Consider where the finished piece will be located and how it will be used.
Varnishing tips:
For best results leave your satin finish coat for the final coat, use clear
gloss varnish for all your under coats.
If you use a satin varnish to build up your coats, you will get a slightly cloudy
finish.
Schelac tips:
Build up in several coats with a thinner mixture.
This can be done very quickly.
Giving schelac a hand polish finish gives the wood a beautiful deep finish.
Oil finishing tips:
We have found that oil finishes can hide active grain.
To get the full luster of active grain we recommend full gloss varnish or shelac.
Top coats tips:
Rubbed effect varnish, satin varnish, or buff and wax a high-gloss topcoat for
a hand rubbed finish.
We will be adding more tips and suggestions as information comes in.
