Every week or two we will feature a uniquely characterized piece online, offered either “in the rough” or as a finished piece. We often have these exceptional pieces in our shop, but they simply don’t get uploaded to the web. These pieces are often never seen by our internet customers, or they don’t look like standouts, when in fact, they are some of the best!

Piece of the Week #2

This slab is 90 inches in length, 48 inches in width, and is 3.5 inches thick; totaling 105 board feet.

This is one remarkable slab! Priced at $8,400.00 plus packaging and shipping.

Piece of the Week - July 16

This active grained slab has some of the most interesting grain we have ever seen. One of a family of four slabs, this is the shorty of the group, and absolutely packed with action!

With flamed whitebait at one end, coming into some really intense curls and a wild natural edge at the other, this is a real stunner. Click on the photos to see the grain clearer.

We understand that these wild edges tend to make some nervous. Some thoughts on how to make this slab into a more conventional shape without loosing the power of the grain: Infill the areas between the wild-edge voids with similar pieces. These infills would be epoxied into place, with the epoxy looking very nice filling the voids between the solid top and the added curl/burl material. Selecting the infill material specifically to match the rest of the top (we can easily match the color and grain for these infills), more surface area will result, whether it is for a dining room table or a countertop. We can suggest more interesting design solutions if you want to call with your ideas for this awesome slab.

This would be a phenomenal piece to hang on a wall.

Infilled or not, another option is to cut this slab into a rectangle shape. In one of the photos you will see some cut lines drawn on the slab. This would result in a much more conventional shape and it will still have the extreme grain activity. Not to worry: If we trim this for you, we will save the offcuts for hobbiests and wood turners who will make their own treasures from them.

No matter how this slab is treated as a finished piece it is a true beauty and an exceptional selection from the world’s coolest pile of wood here at Ancientwood!
